How Does Food, Grease Trap and Other Waste Generate Energy
Cooks and kitchen staff work hard to create delicious menu items for customers, yet much of their masterpieces end up in the trash. It seems quite wasteful, doesn’t it? Well, we have a solution. Did you know we can actually turn this restaurant waste into a useful product? That’s right, the junk produced in kitchens can actually be transformed into a renewable energy source.
Say What?
This is possible because of an innovative machine called an anaerobic digester. Without getting too technical, a digester works much like your stomach. Manure, food waste and other organic materials are placed into this airtight vessel where anaerobic digestion takes place. As the materials decompose, methane and other gases are produced. This combination of gases, known as biogas is then burned to generate energy.
Isn’t That Amazing?!
You bet, but that’s not all! Digesters also help the planet by reducing the amount of methane gas and other greenhouse gases that escape into the atmosphere. Methane gas is 21 times more detrimental to the environment than carbon dioxide and is a major contributor to global warming. Capturing these potent gases also reduces odors which makes for much more enjoyable surroundings. However, the ultimate benefit is that digesters create lots and lots of clean energy.
We Don’t Let Waste Go To Waste
