History
Sussex is technically a borough that was incorporated as such on October 14, 1891. It was initially named Deckertown, after settler Peter Decker. In 1902, the name was changed to Sussex in reference to Sussex County in England. A joint commission wanted to join Sussex with neighboring Wantage into a Township to be known as Sussex-Wantage in a referendum on November 3, 2009, but the effort was rejected despite being supported by the majority of Sussex citizen. D.C. Fontana was born in Sussex in 1939. She was known for working on the original Star Trek series and many westerns.
Sussex Today
While the history of Sussex is not all that exciting, there are plenty of things to do in the area. Both High Point and Kittatinny Valley State Parks are located in the area, offering plenty of opportunity for hiking, camping, horseback riding, and fishing. Also in the area is the Tomahawk Lake Waterpark, an exciting outdoor water experience for the entire family. Of course, no one could forget about Wild West City, which offers an 1880s style theme park with live action shows, stagecoaches, pony rides, museums, shops, miniature golf, and even miniature train rides.
