Stanhope

Stanhope’s first postmaster was the festively-named, Gamaliel Bartlett. In 1829, Mr. Bartlett petitioned the county court for a license to, “Keep an Inn or Tavern in the house in which he now lives.” No slouch herself, Mrs. Bartlett promptly informed Gamaliel that if he went through with the tavern, the “house in which he now lives” would no longer be the house in which he now lives.

If you are looking for somewhere to visit in Stanhope, Gamaliel may not be available for assistance, but you can take a trip all the way to the Wild West. A theme park recreating Kansas life circa 1880, Wild West City is perfect for some old-fashioned (pre-iPad) fun. This is an outdoor attraction, so if you’re not a fan of dirt and farm animals you may want to stick to the Easygoing East City park across town.
